1.1 Basic Structure
A gabion net (also known as gabion mesh or gabion basket) is a flexible protective structure made of high-strength low-carbon steel wire machine-woven into double-twisted hexagonal mesh baskets, filled on site with crushed stone and pebbles. It may look simple, but it combines strength, permeability and ecological benefits all at once - which is exactly why it has earned its place in water projects.
1.2 Three Main Types
Hot-dip galvanized gabion: zinc coating usually ≥80g/m², lowest cost and most widely used, suitable for dry or mildly corrosive environments;
Galfan (zinc-aluminum alloy) gabion: zinc-5% aluminum-mischmetal alloy coating, significantly better resistance to acid, alkali and salt corrosion, the first choice for long-term immersion and coastal projects;
PVC/PE-coated gabion: an extra plastic layer over the wire, strongest corrosion protection, commonly used in landscaping and highly corrosive areas.
1.3 Standards
Production in China generally follows industry standards such as YB/T 4190 (Galvanized Gabion Net). The tensile strength of the wire typically reaches 350–550 MPa, ensuring the baskets will not break or unravel under flood impact or ground deformation.
2. What Are the Real Advantages of Gabion Over Concrete Slope Protection?

2. What Are the Real Advantages of Gabion Over Concrete Slope Protection?

2.1 Flexible and Deformation-Resistant - It Works with the Ground, Not Against It
Concrete is rigid: once the foundation settles, it cracks. Gabion is flexible: it deforms with the terrain instead of fighting it, so it is far less likely to fail.
2.2 Permeable, Scour-Resistant and Eco-Friendly
The gaps between the stones dissipate the impact of flowing water, while allowing water and soil to exchange naturally. Plants, fish and other aquatic life get room to thrive - something concrete can never offer.
2.3 Cost-Effective and Faster to Build
Stone fill can be sourced locally. No heavy machinery or formwork is required - the baskets are assembled and filled by hand. Overall cost and later maintenance both come out lower than concrete.

3. Project Case: How Did 22 km of Gabion Mesh Hold the Line on the Fenhe River in Hongtong County?

3.1 Project Background
The Fenhe is the second-largest tributary of the Yellow River and the "mother river" of Shanxi Province. As part of the "Clean Water into the Yellow River" initiative, the Hongtong section ecological improvement project spans 13.9 km with an approved total investment of CNY 478 million. This stretch faces fast flood flows and soft, loose banks. In the past, its concrete slope protection was scoured and damaged year after year - repaired, then damaged again.
3.2 The Solution: "Clean Foundation + Geotextile + Gabion Mesh" in Three Layers
Instead of the old "hard concrete" approach, the project adopted near-nature engineering methods. The process: first the slope is cleaned and leveled, a geotextile layer is laid to stop seepage, then gabion mesh units about 50 cm high are placed on top - stones are packed into wire cages roughly one meter square - and finally another layer of wire mesh is fixed over the top to "lock" the whole gabion mattress onto the bank. In total, 22 km of this gabion mesh was laid along the riverbanks.
3.3 Results
The gaps between the stones dissipate the energy of rushing water, retain soil and trap sediment, and the flexible structure adapts to foundation settlement. The project preserved the river's natural form to the greatest extent while significantly improving scour resistance, and has become a demonstration of ecological river management in the Yellow River basin.

4. What Is the Market Outlook for Gabion? What Is Still Missing in the Era of Ecological River Management?

4.1 Driven by Policy, Demand Keeps Rising
With policies on ecological water conservancy, sponge cities and mine restoration being rolled out, demand for flexible ecological bank protection materials is accelerating. According to international research institutions, the global gabion market was about USD 1.5 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach about USD 2.7 billion by 2034, a CAGR of about 7.2%. China is the world's largest gabion producer, accounting for about 60% of global capacity.
4.2 From "Auxiliary Material" to "Ecological Necessity"
From major river basin management to rural river improvement, the applications of gabion nets keep expanding, and quality and supply reliability are becoming hard requirements in project procurement.
4.3 A Word of Caution: Don't Buy on Price Alone
As the market heats up, product quality has become uneven. Buyers should pay close attention to three things: coating quality, wire diameter tolerance and mesh opening size. Two gabion products may look the same, but their service lives can differ several times over. Choosing the right specification is the only way to make this "stone armor" truly withstand floods and the test of time.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, gabion is not high-tech - just wire cages filled with stones. But used in the right place, this old method outperforms expensive concrete walls: it costs less, lasts longer, and still leaves room for grass to grow and fish to swim along the river. River management has never been about using the hardest material, but the right one. Given the current momentum of ecological river management, the good days for gabion are probably still ahead.
