Woven gabion baskets adopt a twisted double‑woven wire mesh structure. They feature outstanding flexibility, adapting well to ground settlement and geological deformation. They are widely used in riverbank revetment, channel renovation, slope erosion control and landscape projects. When filled with hard crushed stone or river rock, they form permeable retaining structures. Water can freely pass through gaps between stones, releasing hydrostatic pressure behind the wall and preventing structural collapse caused by water accumulation. Their shortcoming is relatively low rigidity; hence they are not suitable for high‑load vertical retaining or anti‑blast requirements.

Welded gabion boxes are manufactured by spot‑welding horizontal and vertical high‑tensile steel wires at every intersection to form rigid flat panels. Compared with woven gabion baskets, welded gabion boxes feature precise dimensional tolerance, high structural stiffness and neat appearance, with no local bulging after stone filling. Raw materials normally adopt hot‑dip galvanized low‑carbon steel wire for long‑term anti‑corrosion performance, in compliance with ASTM A975 international standard. Common wire diameter ranges from 3.8 mm to 6.0 mm, while mesh openings are custom‑available, including 50×100 mm, 75×75 mm, 50×50 mm and 100×100 mm.
During construction, workers assemble flat panels on‑site into box units using spiral wire connectors. Once unit assembly is completed, hard, non‑weathering rock is filled layer‑by‑layer, with each layer compacted to minimise internal voids. Welded gabion boxes are applied for high retaining walls, bridge abutment protection, highway slope reinforcement, municipal landscape walls and garden decoration. Benefiting from high rigidity, welded gabion boxes can construct higher vertical walls than traditional woven gabion systems.

Blast‑proof cages (Hesco barriers) originate from welded gabion technology and are optimised for explosion mitigation and fragment containment. In addition to heavy‑duty welded steel mesh frames, each unit is equipped with a tear‑resistant, UV‑stabilised polypropylene geotextile liner inside, which prevents leakage of fine sand, gravel or soil fillers. When blast shock‑waves strike the barrier, the filler mass absorbs and dissipates explosion energy, blocks flying fragments and mitigates damage to personnel and critical facilities behind the barrier.
Blast‑proof cages can be folded flat for sea freight, which greatly saves container space and logistics costs. On‑site deployment is efficient: unfold folded modules, interlock adjacent cages, and fill with sand or gravel afterwards. Heavy foundations or special‑purpose construction equipment are not required. Typical applications cover military camp perimeter security, ammunition depot protection, oil‑gas plant safety barriers, embassy secure zones, mining blasting site isolation and emergency flood‑control walls. Multi‑layer stacking must follow brick‑style staggered‑joint rules to ensure overall anti‑toppling performance.
